Forged steel candle holders bring a timeless, cottage charm to any space, but they require some care to maintain their beauty and durability. One effective way to protect these metal pieces is by rubbing beeswax over the surface. When our candle holders are finished in the forge, blacksmith Arron coats them in a thin layer of beeswax, buffing away any excess and creating a beautiful, dark finish. This natural method not only preserves the metal but also complements the use of beeswax candles, creating a harmonious and lasting finish.

Why beeswax works well on Forged Candle Holders
Beeswax forms a thin, protective layer on the metal that helps repel moisture and prevent oxidation. When you use beeswax candles on your forged holders, the wax drips naturally onto the metal, reinforcing this protective coating over time. This synergy means your candle holders stay looking polished and resist rust without harsh chemicals.
Applying beeswax is simple: warm a small amount of beeswax until it softens, then rub it evenly over the entire surface of the candle holder. The melting point of beeswax is just over 60 degrees celsius, so it doesn't need warming too much. Buff gently with a soft cloth to create a subtle shine. This process can be repeated every few months or whenever the metal looks dull.
How to troubleshoot common issues
Even with regular beeswax treatment, forged steel candle holders will always benefit from a little TLC. Here are common problems and how to address them:
Rust spots
If you notice small rust patches, there are tons of natural methods to remove these. Lemon and salt is very effective, as is a vinegar bath. After treatment, clean the surface thoroughly, then reapply a thin layer of beeswax to seal the metal. Avoid using water directly on the metal, as this accelerates rust.
Wax buildup
Over time, excess beeswax can accumulate, creating a sticky or uneven surface. Use a soft cloth warmed slightly with a hairdryer to soften the wax, then wipe it away carefully. After cleaning, apply a fresh, thin layer of beeswax for protection.
Scratches or dullness
Minor scratches can be minimised by rubbing beeswax into the surface and buffing it well.

Tips for long-lasting care
Store candle holders in a dry place to reduce exposure to humidity.
Use beeswax candles to naturally enhance the protective coating.
Clean holders gently with a dry or barely damp cloth; avoid harsh detergents.
Reapply beeswax every few months or after cleaning to maintain the barrier.
